Pediatric Eye Exams: Healthy Vision from the Start

Your child's vision is precious and plays a key role in their overall development and success in school and life. Pediatric eye exams go beyond checking if your child can see clearly — they’re also comprehensive assessments that allow our pediatric eye doctor to evaluate how well their eyes work together.

Getting Pediatric Eye Exams at Different Stages of Childhood

As your child grows and matures, their visual needs change. Different stages of childhood require unique considerations, which is why we recommend that your child get routine eye exams at the following ages:

Infancy and Early Childhood (0 to 2 years)

The first few years of life are critical for visual development. While infants may not be able to communicate their visual experiences, they rely heavily on their vision to explore the world around them.

Our infant eye exams are designed to detect any early signs of eye conditions or developmental issues. During these exams, we assess eye alignment, tracking abilities, and reaction to light.

Identifying and addressing potential problems at this stage can set the foundation for healthy vision in the future.

Preschool Years (2 to 5 years)

The preschool years are a time of rapid growth and learning. At this stage, your child's visual skills, such as focusing, eye teaming, and tracking, continue to develop.

Pediatric eye exams during these years can identify any vision problems that might hinder your child's learning and development. Conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) are more effectively treated when detected early.

Our experienced eye care professionals use child-friendly techniques to make the exam a comfortable experience for your little one.

Elementary School, Pre-Teen and Teen Years (6 to 18 years)

As your child progresses through elementary school and into their pre-teen and teen years, the demands on their vision increase significantly.

Reading, using digital devices, and participating in sports and other activities put their visual system to the test. Regular pediatric eye exams during these years ensure that your child's eyes are working harmoniously and efficiently. This goes beyond whether they can see clearly or not because your child can have 20/20 vision and still have poor visual skills that make learning difficult.

We assess visual acuity, eye coordination, depth perception, and other visual skills. Identifying any issues early on can help your child excel academically and enjoy their favorite activities with ease.
