All About LASIK: The Path to Visual Freedom

Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK ) is an advanced refractive surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

This outpatient procedure offers rapid results and minimal discomfort, often reducing or completely eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

What is LASIK Co-Management?

LASIK co-management is a collaborative approach between our eye doctors and skilled LASIK surgeons.

It starts off with a LASIK consultation that allows us to determine your eligibility for the procedure by considering:

  • Your eye health
  • How severe your refractive error is
  • Corneal thickness
  • Overall medical history

By partnering with leading LASIK surgeons, we’re able to bring you the combined expertise of eye care professionals who are dedicated to your visual well-being.

This comprehensive process ensures that you receive the best possible care from the initial consultation to post-operative follow-up appointments.

The LASIK Co-Management Process

Here’s what you can expect from our LASIK co-management services:

1. Initial Consultation

Our journey together starts with a comprehensive eye exam, where we assess your eye health, visual acuity, and discuss your LASIK candidacy.

2. Personalized Treatment Plan

Based on the examination results, our team will create a tailored treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and visual goals.

3. LASIK Procedure

We'll refer you to a skilled LASIK surgeon for the procedure. On the day of the procedure, your eyes will be numbed with eye drops, and your surgeon will create a thin flap on the cornea using a laser or a microkeratome blade to access the underlying corneal tissue. After this, they’ll reshape the cornea with an excimer laser, allowing light to focus correctly on the retina.

The laser part of the procedure typically takes only a few seconds per eye. Most patients report feeling little to no discomfort, with some experiencing slight pressure during this step. After the cornea has been reshaped, the corneal flap is carefully repositioned, acting as a natural bandage. It heals on its own without the need for stitches.

4. Post-Operative Care

Following the LASIK procedure, we'll closely monitor your healing process through a series of follow-up appointments, ensuring that your eyes are healing properly and your vision is stabilizing. You may also be prescribed temporary eyewear or scleral lenses to aid in the healing process and provide additional comfort as your eyes adjust.
